A tech pack (short for technical package) is the complete set of specifications that tells a factory exactly how to build your bag — structure, materials, measurements, construction, hardware, and the quality level it has to pass. It’s both the instruction manual and, in practice, the contract between you and the manufacturer. Get it right and production becomes repeatable. Leave gaps and every stage turns into guesswork.

Why bags need a tech pack more than clothes do
A t-shirt forgives you. Fabric drapes, fit has wiggle room, and a half-centimeter here or there rarely ruins the product. A bag does not forgive you. It’s an engineered object that has to stand up, hold weight, and survive being thrown into a car trunk a few hundred times.

What’s inside a bag tech pack
Six blocks. Each one closes a specific gap a factory would otherwise fill in for you — usually with whatever is cheapest on their floor.
1. Technical drawings (front, back, side — and inside)
Flat views aren’t enough for a structured bag. The drawing that earns its keep is the section view, because it’s the only place you can show stabilizers, foam, PE board, reinforcements, and how seams are layered. Skip it and the factory guesses at your interior construction, which is exactly the part that decides whether the bag keeps its shape after it’s loaded.
2. Materials and fabric specs
This is where most brands lose control of their own product. “Nylon” or “canvas” is not a spec — it’s a category, and the factory will read it as permission to use whatever roll is on hand. Pin it down:
- Denier (e.g., 600D)
- Weave
- Coating — PU, PVC, or none
- Thickness
- Backing
- Color standard (Pantone, not “navy”)

3. Measurement tables and tolerances
Every dimension, written down: panel sizes, seam allowances, pocket sizes, handle and strap lengths — and the tolerance on each. Miss one measurement and the sample comes back off-proportion, and you’ve burned a sampling round to find out. Tolerances aren’t optional fine print here; they’re the objective standard the factory measures itself against.
4. Hardware specs
The single most under-specified section in bag tech packs, and the one that causes the most after-sale grief. “Zipper” tells the factory nothing. “#5 nylon coil zipper + metal puller” tells them exactly what to buy. For every piece of hardware — zippers, pulls, sliders, D-rings, buckles, rivets, feet, magnetic snaps — list size, finish, plating, and a supplier code if you have one. 5. Branding guidelines
Logo placement, size, Pantone colors, print or embroidery method, and label details. Clear branding specs are cheap insurance against reprints and a whole batch of wasted material.
6. Quality standards and test methods
Most tech packs stop at “AQL level” and a line about stitching. That’s the part that surprised a lot of the brands we work with — quality isn’t created at the QC table, it’s created in the spec, and a real bag spec names the tests the product has to survive.
You don’t need to specify all of these on a simple promotional tote. What does a good bag tech pack look like?
Not long. Clear.
A good one is complete (nothing missing on measurements or materials), unambiguous (no room for a factory to “interpret”), and internally consistent — the drawings, the tables, and the specs all agree with each other. It’s ready to be costed and sampled the moment it lands, and it’s structured so the pattern maker, the cutters, the sewers, and QC can each find what they need without calling you.
The test I’d offer: hand it to someone who’s never spoken to you about the project. If they can build it without a single follow-up question, it’s a good tech pack.

7 common bag tech pack mistakes (and how to fix them)
The same gaps show up over and over, and each one quietly adds cost or a sampling round.
1. Incomplete measurements. → Wrong sample proportions. Fix: a measurement table for every panel, with tolerances.
2. Vague material specs. “Canvas” isn’t a spec. Fix: denier, coating, thickness, backing, supplier code if you have it.
3. Missing section/structure views. → Unstable shape, wrong reinforcements. Fix: include interior construction drawings.
4. Generic hardware. “Zipper” isn’t acceptable. Fix: spec the model — “#5 nylon coil zipper + metal puller.”
5. No stitching or reinforcement standard. Fix: state SPI, seam allowance, and where reinforcement goes.
6. No QC or AQL standard. Fix: define inspection and test criteria before mass production starts.

What if you don’t have a complete tech pack yet?
Honest answer: you can still start, but it changes who’s filling the gaps.
In real projects we regularly receive tech packs with holes in them — a missing coating, hardware that won’t carry the weight it’s pointed at, tolerances left blank, no AQL. A factory that just wants the order will produce it anyway and hand you the problems later. We don’t. We read the document, flag what’s missing, and talk it through with you before sampling, because fixing a spec on paper is free and fixing it in bulk is not.

Clarity beats volume. A few habits that prevent most back-and-forth:
- Use measurable terms, not subjective ones — “120 N pull” beats “make it strong.”
- Keep drawings clean and labeled; skip decorative sketches.
- Make sure measurements line up with the pattern and construction logic.
- Check your material specs don’t contradict each other.
- Call out structural elements explicitly: foam, PE board, stiffeners, webbing layers.
- State tolerances — factories lean on them harder than you’d expect.
- Raise likely weak points early, while it’s still a conversation and not a defect report.
